XtreemOS 2.0 release: A Linux-base Grid OS

Rennes, France November 12, 2009 - The XtreemOS project has released the second public release of its Linux-based Grid operating system under the motto "Making Grid Computing Easier". The consortium has conceived and integrated a platform of open source technologies to enable easier usage, management, scalabilty and programming on top of Grid computing resources.

XtreemOS brings new capabilties to Grids, such as easing job submission and monitoring, while providing a comprehensive security implementation and virtual organization management. XtreemOS comes in three flavors: The PC flavor makes it possible to aggregate standalone PCs as computation resources into XtreemOS Grids. The XtreemOS cluster flavor is based on Kerrighed's LinuxSSI (single system image) technology. LinuxSSI is a Linux cluster providing users an image of a single large system. The third flavor, XtreemOS Mobile has been tailored to run XtreemOS services on mobile devices, such as Nokia Internet Tablets.

The 2.0 release version includes the following functionalities:

* Creation and management of dynamic virtual organizations The security infrastructure includes a set of services that guarantee the secure operation of the system, providing management of credentials, permissions and resources.

* Application execution management AEM is able to search available nodes that fulfill the application needs from within a large number of candidates and then execute the application on the selected nodes. AEM provides job and resource monitoring so that users can get a Linux-like view of their applications. A new experimental feature in this release is the ability to run interactive jobs such as graphical applications unmodifed; harnessing the power of a Grid system. In addition, there is a new graphical tool for editing and managing job submissions. Lasty, grid checkpointing and job migration has been integrated into this version.

* XtreemFS is a replicated and distributed object-based file system. It allows scaling an installation by adding machines with free storage resources. It offers striping of files over multiple storage servers for high performance parallel access. Furthermore, it supports automated mounting of home volumes.

* XOSAGA programming interface The XOSAGA API is built using the Simple API for Grid Applications (SAGA) standard from the Open Grid Forum (OGF). It provides access to XtreemOS resources and services.

* Xosautoconfig is a new tool included in the distribution, which assists Grid administrators and other users to quickly deploy XtreemOS nodes on Virtual Machines, Grids and test beds.

With this release, the XtreemOS consortium invites the participation of external contributors and feedback. XtreemOS is open source and GPL/BSD licensed. For more info please email: contact@xtreemos.eu There is a lively developer channel on #xtreemos-dev on irc.freenode.net, as well.

Linux Internet Kiosk using Debian-Live HOWTO

"This is the revamped version of the Debian Internet Kiosk with Firefox 2 HOWTO. I have adapted it to use Iceweasel, which gives a major improvement for streamlining the process. I have gotten rid of the requirement to install from tarball. The extensions I use have matured a bit so as to give better functionality.

I have chosen to rename and completely overhaul the process. From now on I will be using the Debian-Live system to create Live-USB or Live-CD distributions, leaning towards the USB option. There are many pros and cons between CD and USB solutions, a of few which I will name right now."

WeakNet Linux Assistant 3 (Lite)

"A must-have for anyone interested in Security or Forensics, this CD-sized distro contains all the tools you need to test your skills and excel in the field of INFOSEC." - Johnny Long (iHackCharities.org)

WeakNet Linux has been officialy released as of 9:38PM EST

Watch The Release Video HERE!

The ISO file size is about 600MB. You need a Informer account on Johnny Longs website (ihackcharities.org) to get the release this week.

As of Friday the 30th of October, the release will be made publically available here on WeakNet Labs.com
Check Out Some ScreenShots Below!

WeakNet Linux 3 Lite is small enough to fit onto a CD current build ~600MB and runs servers directly from the CD including Web / PHP, FTP, SSH, and more.

In WeakNet Linux 3 We are Debuting our very own implementation of a Social Network. This Social Network acts much like any other which is built from MySQL / PHP / and HTML. This server can be used for a fun thing to do with friends, or as a hacking point in a Computer Security Lab. One can learn a lot about how PHP, HTML, and Apache2 work plus get some good SQL injection experience.

The default window manager is now FluxBox to save space. They have added the following drivers for Wireless: madwifi-ng (patched for injection) latest build, BCM43x ALL, rt2x00 patched, rt73 (serialmonkey patched for injection), rt73usb, Ath5k, Ath9k, wlan-ng (patched for injection), and more. This version uses the acclaimed WICd network manager.

WardriveSQL now has a GUI startup program to start it up, which allows you to specify remote or localhost MySQL server for remote viewers to watch you wardrive in real time. WiFiZoo has 2 new GUI implementations to get you started sniffing cookies in the lab!

WiFiS33k - Perl implementation of a WiFi Sniffer that can be ran as you are associated to an AP:

Added a much larger SQL injection menu in the desktop menu, and more applications including AirPWN (tested with LORCON and working), and much more.

Web Hacking Portal - same version, updated phishers. Added more security links to Firfox and links to reference sites to learn computer security.

New Forums have also been implemented for FREE HELP with the OS on WeakNet Labs' website HERE: WeakNet Labs' Forums

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 5

"Hello Ubuntu developers,

Welcome to Karmic Koala Alpha 5, which will in time become Ubuntu 9.10.

Pre-releases of Karmic are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 5 is the fifth in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Karmic development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Karmic. You can download it here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ (Ubuntu)
http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ (Ubuntu Server for UEC and EC2)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ (Ubuntu ARM)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ (Kubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ (Xubuntu)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/mythbuntu/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ (Mythbuntu)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

Alpha 5 includes a number of software updates that are ready for large-scale testing. This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please see:

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha5

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop Karmic, have a look at the karmic-changes mailing list:

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/karmic-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting events.

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-announce

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Enjoy,

Many issues have been addressed from the previous Spri Beta One and Beta Two releases, however some issues may remain. Remember, this is a beta release. If you come across any issues, let us know in the forum and we'll get a fix out ASAP

Changes

There are lots of changes in this release, I'll add the ones I consider most important here;

  • The Wallpaper manager has been changed to PCManFM, and as a result, there are now icons on the desktop by default.
  • A shutdown icon has been added to the Spri Desktop. The menu logout buttons will be addressed in a later release.
  • GNOME-Mplayer has replaced gXine as the default videoplayer. I'd appreciate any feedback about this change on this forum thread.
  • Thanks to a suggestion by OU812 on the forum, the volume wheel applet has been replaced and should now be fully functional. Please submit a bug if this isn't the case for you.
  • The Spri and Medibuntu repositories have been added to the repositories list complete with working apt-key, and the spri-desktop package has been added. You should get all updates throught apt using apt-get upgrade.
  • In line with this, upgrade manager has also been added, and is available from the Spri menu.
  • Wicd has replaced network-manager as the network management application. This is a direct result of a bug that I could not fix detailed here. If you have any issues with Wicd, please post on the forum and/or file a bug. If you wish to remina using network manager + nm-applet, the old Spri Beta 2 is still available in the downloads section under "old release".

I think that is about it. Again, feedback is always appreciated via the forum

Spri Linux Live Beta 1

Spri Linux is a lightweight, super fast Ubuntu based Linux distribution focused on speed and usability. It uses the IceWM window manager - a lightning quick, lightweight alternative to Ubuntu's default desktop environment. Having been built from the ground up from an Ubuntu base, Spri can revitalize older hardware and is fast, stable and functional.

Spri Beta One is now available for download from the downloads section of the website

Xen Live CD v2.0

"The Xen Live CD brings together several features and attempts to show many different situations, as far as possible, in a clear and functional way. For example, different architectures of the Hypervisor, pre-configured virtual machines with different kernel of dom0, virtual framebuffer enabled for virtual work stations, extra examples with SDL console enabled, demonstration of conversion between machines HVM / PVM, several methods of how to make a virtual hard disk, among many other examples of what can be done with Xen.

The Xen Live CD is actually a Debian Lenny 5.0. Anyone can create their own version of Xen Live CD, since there is available a ISO generator based on the live-helper. [...]

Some features

* The version i386 of the Xen Live CD has a Xen Hypervisor for 64-bits CPUs as an option in GRUB's menu. You can use without any problem, a 32-bits dom0/domU on top of a 64-bits hypervisor.
* The Xorg open source X Window System.
* Basic Gnome Desktop.
* Five tools ready to use for the management of the system, they are: the command `xm' of the Xen, the libvirt, the program virt-manager, the tool xen-tools and program Convirt.

* Two read-only root file systems that are used by four virtual machines, two servers and two work stations. The servers (server01 and server02) make use of the file "ubuntu-8.10-server-i386.squashfs" and the work stations (client01 and client02) make use of the file "ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.squashfs", both located in the CD-ROM of the Xen Live CD.
* Pre-configured file of a virtual machine to start Windows installation.
* Example of how to convert Linux virtual machines from HVM to PVM. With the new paravirt_ops, this can be done smoothly.
* Also there is a pre-configured file of a virtual machine to start Debian Installer within a Paravirtual domU.
* Three different methods to create the virtual hard disks of their virtual machines, sparse files, discs in LVM and partitions in LVM.
* To explore the possibilities, the tools vblade and aoetools was added to work with the AoE protocol, the Redhat Cluster Suite to make the LVM cluster aware, the virtual switch VDE2 with its web interface VDEtelweb and vconfig to deal with VLANs."

Woof

"Woof is a "magical script" that can download packages of some other GNU/Linux distribution, cut them right down to Puppy-size, then build a Puppy Linux live-CD/DVD -- and do all of this totally automatically. The design of Woof is intended to be so flexible that packages from any distro can be processed.

At the time of writing Woof is supporting Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware and Arch. Puppy can be built from whatever is the current one. Whenever there is a new release, all that Woof needs is the name of the release and Woof will then download all the packages and build a new Puppy Linux."

Build an Ultralight OS with GUI on Debian-Live

If you are running Debian, install debian-live:

apt-get install debian-live

(you must be root (superuser) to install debian-live)

Then type:

lh_config --packages "xserver-xorg-video-vesa xterm xfonts-base xinit jwm"

(the basics and gives you the jwm window manager)

Then type:

lh_build

Then wait for the .iso image to be built.

Use qemu to boot it if you have it installed:

qemu -cdrom binary.iso

If you want other programs included in your operating system, put them in the list along with jwm, xterm, ...

So if you wanted iceweasel (firefox), gftp, xpdf, gxine, leafpad on your os, you would type:

lh_config --packages "xserver-xorg-video-vesa xterm xfonts-base xinit jwm iceweasel gftp xpdf gxine leafpad"

If this doesnt work for you, reply with why.
